Upcoming workshops for Southeast GLRS Communication Pyramid of Interventions Educators who are involved with the development of a communication pyramid of interventions for their school or system are invited to a sharing session at Southeast GLRS in Claxton on December 18, 2007. Please bring information on your Communication POI to share with participants. Charlette Green, Speech/Language Consultant for the Department of Education will answer questions via phone conference from 1:00 to 2:30pm. Autism: Pieces of the Puzzle Consortium of Teachers of Students With Autism Spectrum Disorder This two day workshop will provide introductory and intermediate information to help special education and general education teachers work more effectively with children with autism. Day 1: January 10, 2008, Location: R.J.’s Restaurant, Statesboro 9:00 am to 4:00. Presenter: Lorrie Spencer who is an Assistant Professor at Armstrong University and has worked with individuals with autism for over 15 years. She has taught and worked as an autism/ABA specialist for both Cobb County and Beaufort Co. Schools, and currently consults with several systems and families who have children with autism. Topics will cover characteristics, positive behavior support systems. Participants will learn components of a Functional Behavior Analysis and development of a Behavior Intervention Plan. 5 Contact Hours available. Day 2: January 11, 2008 Location: R.J.’s Restaurant, Statesboro – 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Presenter: Lorrie Spencer We will be discussing visually cued instruction, learning environment and techniques with an introduction to the rubric, Enhancing Instructional Context for Students with Autism Spectrum Disorder (EIC-ASD) rubric for classes of children co-developed by the GNETS and Ga. State University. 5 Contact Hours available. Registration is $25 per day per person, $50 total for both days (Lunch is included in the registration) Scheduling For the Least Restrictive Environment This two day (10 Contact Hour) work shop will provide all levels of school scheduling teams with the needed information to effectively schedule students with disabilities in the LRE by using existing resources to their fullest potential to provide services throughout the special education continuum. This training is appropriate for anyone who is involved with LRE decision making at the IEP level and at the building level. Day 1: January 10, 2008, Location: Southeast GLRS Claxton – 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. LRE decisions begin with the IEP; training will focus on the LRE Decision Making Model. Participants will also be trained in the LRE projection process to prepare for scheduling the school. Participants will take this information to their school to prepare for actual scheduling of students with disabilities. Day 2: May 5, 2008, Location: Southeast GLRS Claxton – 8:30 am to 3:30 pm. Follow-up to Day 1 Dr. Melissa Hughes will speak on LRE funding and how to provide appropriate services while maximizing FTE. In the afternoon Dr. Hughes will be available to assist schools who have completed Day 1 in scheduling their building for students with disabilities. Identification and Education of Exceptional Students Description: This course is required for certification of teachers in the state of Georgia. Upon meeting the course requirements, participants will demonstrate knowledge of historical background, legal issues and mandates, identification procedures and delivery of services, instructional models and practices, and conceptual issues related to the field of special education. Tuition: $300. Date: January 18, 2008 Location: Tattnall County Board of Education, Reidsville, GA Time: 12:30 to 2:00pm June Nilles will present a workshop on the SEMS IEP program for teachers and she will demonstrate new applications. Georgia Alternative Assessment Consortium Date: January 31, 2008 Location: Southeast GLRS, Claxton Time: 8:30-3:30 5 Contact Hours This consortium is open to all teachers of students who participate in the Georgia Alternative Assessment, (GAA). A GAA update will be provided by Core Access Teachers, (CATs) Audrey Mallard and Elizie McCleskey. Participants are asked to bring their GAA handbooks. Participants will also meet in job alike sessions to share ideas and techniques.
