Entrance Requirements: Good moral character; good physical and mental health; minimum age of 18 years by July 1; high school diploma or GED certificate; minimum SAT score, math and verbal total of 700 or minimum ACT composite score of 15.0; passing grades in high school for algebra and science; and an acceptable score on the Health Occupations Aptitude Examination. Applications are sent out upon request between August 1 and January 15.

 

Special Services Available: Some students with physical disabilities have received training.

Training Offered: The institute, under the direction of the Division for Rehabilitation Services, offers a wide variety of services for persons with disabilities including medical rehabilitation, vocational and independent living services, head injury rehabilitation, and outpatient services. Individuals with spinal cord injuries, amputations, strokes, head injuries, seizure disorders, hearing and visual impairment, communication disorders, orthopedic and neurological impairments, emotional/psychiatric problems, and developmental disabilities can be served through one or more of the multi-faceted programs.

 

Specifically, vocational and independent living services assist persons with physical and/or intellectual disabilities in developing vocational goals, adjusting to community living, learning to live independently, adjusting to the work environment, and gaining specific job skills for employment.

 

The program includes comprehensive evaluation in:

 

Medical, psychological, social, vocational, and recreational areas

Rehabilitation counseling

Work and interpersonal adjustment services

Vocational training for over 30 skilled and semiskilled occupations

Residential services (if needed)

Assignment of each student to a specialized rehabilitation team

Independent living

 

 

The vocational training department provides vocational and technical training for skilled, semi-skilled, competitive, and noncompetitive employment. Training is provided in the following areas:

bookkeeping, construction and building maintenance, data entry, duplicating and printing, electronic assembly, general clerical skills, general mechanics, hospital industry skills, radio and TV repair,
