Making the
transition to higher education is a major life event. Although exciting, it
requires hard work and planning for a successful outcome. Before you start, it
is a good idea to set up a system for organizing your information. Use a ring
binder notebook to hold your notes and insert pages with pockets to accommodate
brochures and other printed material that you will be gathering. Dividers will
help you organize the information from the various schools that you choose to
contact. Prepare a list of questions for these institutions and keep it in the
front of the notebook. Some of these questions might include:
1. What is the name of the office that provides services to students
with disabilities?
2. What is the telephone number?
3. Can you give me the name of a specific contact person?
1. May I speak to the counselor who assists students who have (name
of disability)?
2. My
disability is _______________.
What do I need
to do to qualify for services through your department?
3. What type
of documentation will you need to verify my disability? How recent must it be?
4. What is
the name and address of the specific person to whom this information
should be sent?
5. How much
in advance must I submit this information before receiving services?
6. Will your
department provide accommodations on required placement tests before I
register?
7. Is there
any special orientation program for students with disabilities?
8. Do you
provide any special assistance with the admission process to students with
disabilities?
9. 1
understand that services are individualized, but what type of services are
usually provided for someone with my disability?
10. What type of assistive devices and technology are available? Where
are they located?
11. Can you
describe the terrain at your school? Are all of the buildings accessible? Do
you have accessible dorms on campus?
12. Do you
provide any special tutoring for students with disabilities?
13. Is there a
campus club or organization for students with disabilities?
14. I have some
special medical needs. What assistance can your department or the student
health services give me to set up the connections I will need in your
community?
15. May I make an appointment to meet you when I visit the campus?
