Postsecondary education programs and activities that receive federal assistance are required to maintain nondiscriminatory admissions and recruitment procedures and are to make “academic adjustments” for students with disabilities. Section 504’s regulations provide that such modifications or adjustments may include changes in the length of time permitted for the completion of degree requirements, substitution of specific courses for the completion of degree requirements, and adaptation of the manner in which specific courses are conducted. 34 C.F.R. § 104.44(a). For students with impaired sensory, manual or speaking skills, educational “auxiliary aids and services” are required and may include things such as taped texts, interpreters or other effective methods of making orally delivered materials available, and readers in libraries. However, attendants, individually prescribed devices, readers for personal use or study, or other devices of a personal nature are not required. 34 C.F.R. §104.44(d).

All programs covered by Section 504 and/or the ADA are required to designate one or more Section 504/ADA coordinators. The Section 504/ADA Coordinator should be able to address any questions or concerns that may arise as to the anti-discrimination provisions of these laws and their application to the particular program.
