How is it determined if my child is eligible for special education?

State regulations provide the eligibility requirements that a student must meet in order to qualify for a special education program. All information (evaluations, reports, observations, etc.) will be used to determine if your child will qualify for special education.

You will be invited to a meeting with the school staff and evaluator(s) to determine whether or not your child meets eligibility criteria.

After the eligibility determination meeting, an IEP/placement meeting (often called a staffing) will be scheduled with you to plan your child’s special education program.

If your child is not eligible, ask what other programs or curriculum modifications are available. These discussions usually take place with you and your child’s Student Support Team at your home school.
